I might be a little biased (see surname in byline), but it’s hard to beat the contemporary look and sometimes fantastical functionality of Italian furniture. Take, for example, the Odyssey dining table in the King East showroom of Manzano-based Calligaris. Its walnut base supports a glass tabletop that rotates to reveal two leaves that twist into place, turning the six-seater into a set-up large enough for 12.

Kartell was founded near Milan in 1949 but is predated by Calligaris, established in Manzano in 1923. Only founder Antonio Calligaris crafted his first pieces in wood, whereas Kartell was founded using modern plastics.
