Calligaris Toronto Store

Last week I had the pleasure of attending the opening of the new Calligaris Store here in Toronto and sitting down with the owner himself, Alessandro Calligaris, for an interview. For those of you unfamiliar with the brand, Calligaris is a manufacturer of modern Italian furniture. The company was started in 1923 by Alessandro's grandfather, making custom wood chairs, most notably the Marocca Chair. One of the first manufacturer's to implement modern technology in the fabrication of the furniture, the company has grown over the years and is now well past manufacturing just chairs, they have 411 products that are distributed in more than 90 countries. But that doesn't mean that it operates like you regular large furniture chain. Calligaris is still very much like a boutique operation, with care and attention going into each and every piece under the scrutinizing eye of Mr. Calligaris. This was only further reinforced when he personally took me around the new 5000 sf space and showed me the details and functionality of the furniture. He's definitely proud of the product his company designs and manufactures.
