I might be a little biased (see surname in byline), but it’s hard to beat the contemporary look and sometimes fantastical functionality of Italian furniture. Take, for example, the Odyssey dining table in the King East showroom of Manzano-based Calligaris. Its walnut base supports a glass tabletop that rotates to reveal two leaves that twist into place, turning the six-seater into a set-up large enough for 12.

Of course, King East needs more furniture stores like Queens Quay needs more condo buildings, but this Italian import offers a sleek alternative to the more traditional styles of Up Country and the antique stores that dot the strip.

I was like a kid in a candy shop this week as I toured the brand new Calligaris Toronto store (170 King Street East), and not just because so much of the furniture is candy coloured. Lots of home decor retailers claim to be in the sweet spot between high- and low-end but Calligaris is the real deal hawking beautifully-designed Italian furnishings that aren’t disposable but won’t break the bank either.
